Petr Kvíčala / Research into the Ornament Continues

26.03.2025 - 26.07.2025

Fait Gallery, Ve Vaňkovce 2, Brno

Curator: Ondřej Chrobák

Opening: 26th March, 7 pm

Petr Kvíčala's exhibition in the Fait Gallery presents his works from the last fifteen years. In his art, Kvíčala focuses on ornament as an issue of mathematical order, and at the same time as an aesthetic phenomenon with a bad reputation. Ornaments continue to permeate Kvíčala's paintings like a mycelium, sometimes hidden, sometimes as signals. This polarity is perhaps more distinct in the period mapped by the current exhibition than in the earlier stages. Parallel to painting, work with wood comes into the fore again. Petr Kvíčala invited Karíma Al-Mukhtarová to participate in the exhibition as a guest artist.

A frequently used phrase in poetry is that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. Could one say that there are also selfies of the soul? What does a selfie say about our identity? The similarity of this type of photographic self-portrait and a mirror also reminds us of the situation when we see things the other way round when taking a photograph. In the original, unreversed position the image returns after the shutter clicks and the photo is saved in a folder. The artist Eva Rabářová works with these formal features of selfie in the project called Kurt Hermes and she captures the theme of the communication environment of smartphones. The fact that this is rather more poetic, than a utopian reflection, supports not only Eva’s collages, but also the accompanying texts generated by a messenger.
