“CS CONCEPTUAL ART OF THE 1970s” is the largest exhibition project so far to present a selection of works by sixty-five Czechoslovak artists. The exhibition observes, through interconnected topics, the closeness of the Czech and Slovak art scenes that have been approached, since the breakup of Czechoslovakia, as two separate entities. The exhibition concept is rooted in a quest for their intersections and joint points of departure. Never in the history of Czech and Slovak art was the need for a mutual dialogue cultivated and developed as much as in the 1970s.

The exhibition is devoted to the visual language of conceptual thinking of the 1970s presented on the basis of categories defined by the curators. Different forms of work with drawing and photography, conceptual art exploring the relationship between type and image, and also futurological, action and environmental projects are introduced within this framework. The viewer is thus treated to a varied mosaic that demonstrates, on a broad spectrum of artists, the sheer scope of the conceptual approach in the years 1968–1982. An important part of the exhibition is a timeline featuring graphic information about private exhibitions in flats, vestibules and other alternative spaces; at the same time, it demonstrates the social, political and cultural contexts in which conceptual art existed, often as an alternative to the official political situation in Czechoslovakia at that time.

A major impetus for the exhibition was the strong conceptual tradition in Brno, the popularization of which in recent years is credited to the House of the Arts, as well as to the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
